EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the young and charismatic Prince of Wales, Edward VII, in 1901, as he stood resplendent in his military uniform at the Trooping the Colour parade. Edward, who would later ascend to the throne as King Edward VII in 1901, is seen here at the age of 59, exuding confidence and authority. The year 1901 was a significant one in British history, marking the death of Queen Victoria and the beginning of a new era under Edward's reign. The Prince of Wales had long been the heir apparent, and had spent many years preparing for his future role as monarch. In this image, Edward is accompanied by his trusted advisor and friend, Sir Henry Cotton Downey, 1st Baronet. Downey, who was born in 1841, served as the Prince of Wales' equerry from 1886 until his death in 1910. He was a trusted confidant and advisor to Edward, and played a crucial role in the Prince's transition to kingship. The Trooping the Colour parade, which takes place every year on the birthday of the monarch, is a time-honored tradition that dates back to the 17th century. It involves the monarch inspecting troops and cavalry in a grand procession through the streets of London. This photograph captures a moment in history, as Edward VII and Downey review the troops, marking the beginning of a new chapter in British royal history. The photograph is a testament to the rich history and tradition of the British monarchy, and offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of grandeur and pageantry. This image, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, is a valuable historical document that captures a moment in time, and offers a fascinating insight into the life and reign of Edward VII and his trusted advisor, Sir Henry Cotton Downey.
