This powerful image captures a pivotal moment in American history: the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation was a presidential decree that declared all slaves in Confederate-held territory to be free. The document, which is depicted in the foreground of the photograph, bears Lincoln's signature and the seal of the United States.
