EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking portrait, Ezekiel Hopkins (1633-1690) is depicted as the Bishop of Derry in Ireland during the late 17th century. Hopkins' long, curly hair frames his serious expression, adding to the sense of authority and piety conveyed by his attire as a member of the Anglican clergy. Born in England, Hopkins was educated at Trinity College in Dublin and ordained as a deacon in 1658. He served as a chaplain to the English army during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland and was later appointed Bishop of Derry in 1661, following the restoration of the monarchy. Hopkins' tenure as Bishop was marked by his efforts to promote religious unity and reconciliation in the wake of the tumultuous political and religious upheavals of the previous decades. Despite his commitment to the Anglican Church, Hopkins faced challenges from both Catholic and Presbyterian factions in Ireland, as well as from some within his own denomination. He was known for his strong leadership and his ability to navigate complex political and religious issues with diplomacy and tact. Hopkins also played a role in the education system in Derry, overseeing the establishment of a grammar school and a charity school. This portrait captures Hopkins at a pivotal moment in Irish history, as the country struggled to rebuild and reconcile after years of conflict. The image serves as a reminder of the important role that religious leaders played in shaping the social and political landscape of the time, and of the challenges they faced in promoting unity and stability. Hopkins' legacy as Bishop of Derry continues to be celebrated in Ireland, and this portrait offers a glimpse into the complex and fascinating history of the period.
