EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the intense moment as James Gleason's character, the hapless fall guy, enters a dimly lit room, clutching a suspicious-looking suitcase. Accompanied by playwright George Abbott, Gleason made his Broadway debut with the American premiere of "The Fall Guy" at the Eltinge Theatre in New York on March 10, 1925. The play, which had originally been produced in London at the Apollo Theatre on September 20, 1926, tells the story of an innocent man who mistakenly becomes embroiled with a dangerous drugs gang when he believes the suitcase contains illegal alcohol. Dressed in a shabby suit, straw boater hat, and carrying a patterned suitcase, Gleason's character exudes a sense of unease as he approaches the open doorway. The wallpaper on the walls of the room and the shadows cast by the doorway add to the theatrical atmosphere of the scene, transporting us back to the 1920s and the world of gangsters and illicit activities. "The Fall Guy" was a popular and successful play of the era, and this image captures the tension and suspense that made it such an entertaining experience for audiences. The image is a testament to the enduring appeal of the gangster genre and the power of live theatre to transport us to another time and place.
