Felix Berenguer de Marquina (1736-1826): A Prominent Figure in Spanish Colonial Administration This striking colored engraving depicts Felix Berenguer de Marquina, a Spanish naval officer, colonial official, and viceroy of New Spain (Mexico) between 1800 and 1803. Born in 1736, Marquina rose through the ranks of the Spanish Navy and later served as the Governor of Cuba before being appointed as the viceroy of New Spain. Marquina's tenure as viceroy was marked by significant events, including the failed attempt to invade Louisiana by the Spanish and the ongoing conflict with the British in the region. Despite these challenges, Marquina managed to maintain order and stability in the vast colony, which was home to a diverse population of indigenous peoples, Europeans, and Africans.
