EDITORS COMMENTS
Francisco Goya's Caprices, a series of 82 etchings created between 1797 and 1798, represent some of the most profound and thought-provoking works of the Spanish artist. This particular print, Plaque 77 from the Caprices series, held at the Prado Museum in Madrid, is a prime example of Goya's satirical and critical take on society during the late 18th century in Europe. The Caprices series is often considered a precursor to the Romantic movement, with its exploration of the darker aspects of human nature and its departure from the traditional rules of art. In Plaque 77, Goya presents a scene of two figures, their faces obscured by shadows, engaged in an ambiguous interaction. The figure on the left appears to be holding a rope or a whip, while the other figure seems to be bound or being led. The title of this print, "What one does to the other," adds to the enigma, leaving the interpretation open to the viewer. The Caprices series was created during a tumultuous period in Spanish history, marked by political upheaval and social unrest. Goya's biting satire and critique of society's ills resonated with many, and the Caprices were not widely circulated until after Goya's death. Today, they are celebrated as some of the most important works in the history of European art, offering a unique window into the mind of one of the greatest artists of all time.
