EDITORS COMMENTS
This chilling image captures two female members of a notorious French gang of robbers, known as 'chauffeurs,' who terrorized the streets of France during the volatile last decades of the 18th century. The exact dates of this photograph are uncertain, but the fashion and hairstyles suggest the 1790s. Chauffeurs were a unique breed of criminal, often working in pairs and using horses and carriages to outmaneuver their victims. They were notorious for their brazenness and their ability to evade capture, making them a constant source of fear and anxiety for the people of France. The women in this photograph are dressed in the height of fashionable attire for the time, with intricately styled wigs and elegant gowns. However, their piercing gazes and menacing expressions betray their true nature. Armed with pistols and other weapons, they were as deadly as any man. The chauffeurs' crimes ranged from petty theft to armed robbery and even murder. They were a law unto themselves, and their reign of terror continued unabated until the early 19th century, when increased police presence and more effective law enforcement finally began to bring them to justice. This photograph is a stark reminder of the criminal underworld that existed in France during this period of great social and political upheaval. It also highlights the surprising role that women played in this world, defying societal norms and taking on traditionally male roles as criminals and thieves. The image is a haunting testament to the lawless and chaotic nature of urban life in 18th century France.
