EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Gabriel Sartine, a Spanish-born statesman who rose to prominence in France during the late 18th century. Born Antoine Raymond Jean Guilbert de Sartine in 1729 in what is now Huelva, Spain, Sartine made a name for himself in the French political sphere as a skilled diplomat and effective administrator. Sartine's impressive career began in the French military, where he served as a lieutenant in the Royal Horse Guards. However, his true calling was in politics, and he quickly rose through the ranks. In 1763, Sartine was appointed Intendant of Paris, a position that gave him control over the city's finances and administration. In 1774, Sartine was appointed Lieutenant General of Police, a post that placed him at the heart of the French government's security apparatus. During his tenure, Sartine implemented a number of reforms aimed at modernizing the police force and improving public safety. He also played a key role in suppressing the violent uprisings that rocked Paris during the late 1780s. Despite his successes, Sartine's tenure as Lieutenant General of Police was not without controversy. He was criticized by some for his heavy-handed tactics and his close relationship with King Louis XVI. However, Sartine remained a trusted advisor to the monarch until the French Revolution, when he was forced to flee the country. Sartine died in exile in London in 1801, having left behind a complex and fascinating legacy. This print captures the intensity and determination of a man who dedicated his life to serving his country, even in the face of adversity.
