This evocative photograph captures the stern and resolute visage of General Alfred-Amédée Dodds de Lagrée Duchesne, a prominent figure in French colonial history. Taken in 1895 during the height of the French colonization of Madagascar, the image portrays Duchesne in his full military regalia, complete with a red tunic, black trousers, and a distinctive black belt adorned with a silver buckle and a whip. The general's piercing gaze and clenched fist convey a sense of determination and authority, as if he is ready to lead his troops into battle at a moment's notice. Duchesne's military career began in the French Army in 1859, and he saw action in various European conflicts before being appointed as the Governor-General of Madagascar in 1895.
