Andromeda, according to Greek mythology, was a beautiful princess who was sacrificed to a sea monster as a punishment for her mother's vanity. The monster, Cetus, was eventually slain by the hero Perseus, who then freed Andromeda and married her. The constellation of Andromeda is represented by a series of stars and asterisms, including the famous Andromeda Galaxy, which is shown as a chain binding the princess to the rocky shore. The two triangles flanking Andromeda are the constellations of Triangula, which are located near Andromeda and are named for their distinctive triangular shapes.
