EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1883, showcases the iconic statues of Gog and Magog standing proudly outside the historic Guildhall in London, England. The Guildhall, a magnificent medieval building, has served as the central hub of London's civic life since its construction in the late 15th century. The statues of Gog and Magog, two legendary giants of English folklore, have guarded the entrance to the Guildhall since the 17th century. Gog and Magog are believed to have been allies of the biblical figure, King Belshazzar of Babylon, who, according to the Old Testament, was punished by God for desecrating sacred vessels during a grand feast. The giants were later driven out of Babylon by the Persian king, Cyrus the Great, and eventually made their way to England. The origin of the statues is shrouded in mystery, with some believing they were brought to England by the Romans, while others suggest they were gifts from the King of Denmark or the Duke of Norfolk. Regardless of their origins, the statues have become an integral part of London's rich history and cultural heritage. In this photograph, the intricately detailed statues of Gog and Magog are seen flanking the entrance to the Guildhall, their expressions stern and protective. The image captures the grandeur and historical significance of the Guildhall, while also highlighting the enduring presence of these mythical giants who have watched over the city for centuries. This photograph is a testament to the fascinating stories and legends that are interwoven into the fabric of London's history.
