This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases an impressive collection of European tit species. The image includes seven different types of tits: the Great Tit (Parus major, depicted in the top left corner with a red patch on its chest), the Blue Tit (Parus caeruleus, with a blue-gray body and a white belly), the Marsh Tit (Poecile palustris, with a brown back and a white belly), the Long-tailed Tit (Aegithalos caudatus, easily recognizable by its long, bushy tail), the Coal Tit (Periparus ater, with a black head and a white belly), the Crested Tit (Lophophanes cristatus, with a distinctive crest on its head), and the Bearded Reedling (Panurus biarmicus, with a brown body and a white beard). Tits are small, active birds that belong to the Paridae family. They are known for their agility and their ability to open seeds using their strong beaks.
