EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative 19th century impression captures the enigmatic figures of the Gunpowder Plot conspirators, led by the infamous Guy Fawkes, as they are remembered in history. The image, created in 1832, portrays, from left to right, Robert Catesby, Father Henry Garnet, Thomas Percy, Thomas Winter, Robert Winter, Guy Fawkes, Thomas Wintour, and Sir Everard Digby. The Gunpowder Plot was a failed assassination attempt against King James I of England and his government, orchestrated in 1605. The conspirators aimed to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament, in response to the persecution of English Catholics. Guy Fawkes, the most recognizable figure in the plot, was appointed to guard the explosives stored in a cellar beneath the House of Lords. However, the plot was discovered on November 4, 1605, when authorities discovered Fawkes and the gunpowder. The conspirators, including the other men depicted in this print, were arrested and brought to trial. Most were executed, while some, like Father Garnet, were found guilty in absentia. This haunting portrait brings to life the faces of these historical figures, immortalizing their infamy in the annals of English history. The conspirators' plot to alter the course of history through violence and treachery remains a fascinating and intriguing chapter in the country's past.
