Gustav Hamels plane ready to leave Hendon for Windsor
Gustav Hamels aeroplane ready to leave Hendon Aerodrome for Windsor on the very first airmail flight. The first aerial mail service took place on 9 September 1911 from Hendon to Windsor and back again, and Hamel was the first pilot to arrive. King George V gave permission for the aeroplanes to land in the grounds of Windsor Castle. During September 1911 the Grahame-White company operated an experimental air mail service for two weeks between Hendon and Windsor. As well commemorating the coronation of King George V, and raising money for charity, the event publicised the possibilities of the aeroplane as a means of transport. In this photograph the words AERIAL MAIL can be seen, painted under the wings of the plane

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical print captures the moment when Gustav Hamel's aeroplane was ready to leave Hendon Aerodrome for Windsor on the very first airmail flight. It was September 9, 1911, and Hamel made history as the first pilot to arrive in Windsor as part of this experimental air mail service organized by the Grahame-White company.
King George V himself gave permission for the aeroplanes to land in the grounds of Windsor Castle, marking a significant moment in aviation history. The words "AERIAL MAIL" can be seen painted under the wings of Hamel's plane, highlighting the importance of this new form of communication and transport.
The event not only commemorated King George V's coronation but also raised money for charity while showcasing the possibilities of using airplanes for delivering mail. This special postal service captured people's imaginations and demonstrated how aviation could revolutionize communications and travel.
As we look at this print today, we are reminded of a time when flying was still a novelty and sending letters by air seemed like something out of science fiction. Gustav Hamel's pioneering spirit and dedication to pushing boundaries in aviation have left an indelible mark on history.
