This evocative portrait captures the noble and heroic countenance of Henri IV, King of France and Navarre, as he gazes out with a steady, determined expression. Born Henri de Bourbon in 1553, he ascended to the throne of Navarre in 1572 and later became King of France in 1589, following the death of Henry III. His reign marked a significant period of peace and stability for France, which had been plagued by religious and political turmoil. Henri IV was a charismatic and popular monarch, known for his military prowess and his ability to unite the fractured kingdom. He famously converted to Catholicism in 1593, a move that helped to heal the wounds of the religious wars and pave the way for a more united France. This portrait, painted around 1610, captures the king in the prime of his life, with a well-groomed beard and a regal bearing that speaks to his strength and authority. Henri IV's reign was marked by a number of important achievements, including the Edict of Nantes, which granted religious tolerance to Protestants in France, and the establishment of the French Academy, which helped to promote the arts and culture.
