EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait depicts Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla (1753-1811), a pivotal figure in Mexican history as both a priest and a leader of the Mexican War of Independence. The painting, executed in oil on canvas by the renowned artist Odilón García, captures Hidalgo's intense gaze and unwavering determination. The use of rich, vibrant colors adds to the powerful impact of the image. Born in the town of Pangasofo in present-day Jalisco, Mexico, Hidalgo y Costilla began his religious career as a priest in 1778. However, his desire for social justice and equality fueled his involvement in the Mexican struggle for independence from Spain. In September 1810, Hidalgo issued the famous "Grito de Dolores," or Cry of Dolores, which is considered the beginning of the Mexican Revolution. He led a diverse army of peasants, indigenous people, and mestizos against the Spanish colonial forces. Although ultimately unsuccessful in his military campaign, Hidalgo's actions ignited the flames of revolution, inspiring other leaders such as José María Morelos and Augustín de Iturbide to continue the fight for Mexican independence. Today, this powerful portrait of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla is housed in the Anthropology and History Museum in La Paz, Mexico, serving as a testament to the courage and conviction of this influential Mexican leader.
