EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration depicts the intense and pivotal moment of the war between monarchs Satouriona, Outina, and Potanou in the 16th century, as recorded in the History of Florida. The arrival of Europeans in Florida had a profound impact on the indigenous tribes, leading to a series of tribal wars. In 1562, this significant conflict unfolded, with three powerful leaders vying for dominance. The drawing, created by Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues in 1562, was later edited and published in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1591 by Theodore de Bry. Le Moyne, a Frenchman who accompanied Jean Ribault's expedition to Florida, was an accomplished artist and naturalist. His detailed and vivid depiction of the scene offers a unique insight into the lives of the indigenous peoples of Florida during this tumultuous period. In the illustration, we see a fierce battle taking place. The warriors of the three tribes are engaged in a fierce fight, their arrows flying through the air, some already finding their mark. The sound of gunfire echoes in the background, adding to the chaos and intensity of the scene. Smoke rises from the huts and the ground, indicating the destruction wrought by the conflict. Despite the violence, there are moments of tension and strategy. The warriors of Satouriona, led by their monarch, are seen attacking from behind a makeshift fence, using it as cover from their enemies' arrows. The warriors of Outina and Potanou, determined to defend their lands, are shown fiercely fighting back. This powerful and evocative illustration serves as a reminder of the profound impact that European exploration had on the indigenous peoples of the Americas and the complex and often violent political dynamics that existed between them.
