EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time as Inuit people, also known as Esquimaux or Lapps at the turn of the 20th century, tend to their reindeer herd at the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen Station in St. Anthony, Newfoundland and Labrador. Dating back to circa 1910, this image offers a glimpse into the daily life of these indigenous communities who had recently adopted reindeer herding as a means of survival in the harsh Canadian climate. The couple in the image, dressed in traditional clothing, work together to milk their reindeer. The woman, with her back to the camera, leans over the animal, skillfully manipulating its teats to extract the milk. The man, wearing a fur-trimmed parka and holding a bucket, collects the milk, which will be used for both consumption and trade. The Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen, established in 1895, aimed to provide support and assistance to fishermen and their families in Newfoundland and Labrador. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Mission began to explore the possibility of introducing reindeer herding as a sustainable alternative livelihood for the indigenous population, who were struggling to adapt to the changing economic landscape. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the resilience and adaptability of the Inuit people, who were able to thrive in some of the most challenging environments through their ingenuity and resourcefulness. The image also underscores the important role that organizations like the Royal National Mission played in supporting and empowering indigenous communities during a time of significant social and economic change.
