EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures the enigmatic figure of Jack Rattenbury, a notorious smuggler from Beer, Devonshire, who lived during the early 19th century. Known as the 'Rob Roy of the West,' Rattenbury led an intriguing life filled with adventure, danger, and intrigue. Born in Beer, a small coastal town, Rattenbury began his career as a fisherman before being pressed into service in the Navy. However, his restless spirit and entrepreneurial instincts led him to the world of smuggling, where he became a notorious figure. Rattenbury's exploits were chronicled in his own memoirs, published in Sidmouth in 1837. The book provided a rare insight into the world of smuggling, offering a firsthand account of the risks and rewards of this clandestine trade. Rattenbury's tales of daring escapes, hidden coves, and daring encounters with the authorities captured the imagination of the public, making him a folk hero in the region. Despite his criminal activities, Rattenbury was a complex character. He was known to be generous to those in need and was respected by many in the community. However, his actions also brought danger and uncertainty to the lives of the people of Beer and the surrounding area. The image of Rattenbury, with his piercing gaze and rugged appearance, serves as a reminder of the allure and danger of the sea and the world of smuggling that once thrived in the West Country of England during the 1830s.
