This evocative portrait captures James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States, during his tenure from 1845 to 1849. Born on November 2, 1795, in Pineville, North Carolina, Polk rose through the ranks of Tennessee politics to become a member of the House of Representatives and later a governor. His presidency marked a pivotal period in American history, as the United States expanded its territory through the Mexican-American War. Polk's presidential term began in March 1845, and his distinctive high-collared, white, starched shirt and neatly combed, slicked-back hair are on full display in this image.
