EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the stoic and resolute gaze of Jemadar Mir Dast VC (1874-1950), an Indian soldier who distinguished himself with unparalleled bravery during the British Indian Army's campaigns in the North-West Frontier of present-day Pakistan. The Victoria Cross (VC), the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces, was bestowed upon Mir Dast for his exceptional valor during the Battle of Saragarhi on September 12, 1897. Mir Dast, a common soldier hailing from the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, led a small garrison of just 21 Sikhs against an invading Afghan army of over 10,000 troops. Despite being vastly outnumbered, Mir Dast and his men held their ground for hours, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy before ultimately sacrificing their lives. Mir Dast himself was reportedly last seen standing atop a wall, firing his rifle until he was shot down. This photograph, taken in the latter half of the 20th century, is a poignant reminder of the historical significance of Mir Dast's heroic actions. His unwavering bravery in the face of overwhelming odds continues to inspire generations of soldiers and civilians alike. The Victoria Cross stamp, featuring a portrait of Mir Dast, serves as a testament to his indomitable spirit and the enduring legacy of the British Indian Army's rich and complex history.
