EDITORS COMMENTS
John Cam Hobhouse, Lord Broughton (1786-1869): A Radical Politician and Prolific Writer This engraved portrait captures John Cam Hobhouse, 1st Baron Broughton (1786-1869), an influential English radical politician and prolific writer of the Victorian era. Born on July 19, 1786, Hobhouse was a key figure in the political landscape of the early 19th century, advocating for reforms and challenging the status quo. Hobhouse's political career began in earnest when he was elected to Parliament in 1812 as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Devonport. He quickly made a name for himself as a radical reformer, advocating for the extension of the franchise, the abolition of the Corn Laws, and the reform of the House of Lords. In addition to his political pursuits, Hobhouse was also an accomplished writer. He authored several works, including "A Journal of a Tour on the Continent," which provided a vivid account of his travels in Europe during the Napoleonic Wars. His writings reflected his liberal views and his belief in the importance of individual freedom and self-expression. As the years passed, Hobhouse's radical views became less fashionable, and he was eventually expelled from the House of Commons in 1834 for opposing the government's policy on the Corn Laws. However, he continued to write and advocate for reform, and in 1866, he was created a peer as Baron Broughton of Broughton in the County of Somerset. This portrait, taken c.1869, captures Hobhouse in the later years of his life, with a stern expression and a well-groomed appearance. Despite the passage of time, his commitment to radical politics and his love of writing remained unwavering. Hobhouse passed away on December 1, 1869, leaving behind a rich legacy as a champion of individual freedom and a prolific writer.
