This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Ebenezer Sibly's Universal System of Natural History published in 1794-1796, showcases a unique and intriguing assembly of three distinct animals: the Kangaroo (Macropus giganteus), Badger (Meles meles), and Opossum (Didelphis virginiana). Sibly, a prolific naturalist, meticulously documented the natural world in his comprehensive five-volume work, covering fauna, flora, and geology. The central figure of this illustration is the majestic Kangaroo, the largest marsupial species, native to Australia. Its powerful hind legs are poised for a leap, while its long, muscular tail provides balance and support. The Kangaroo's pouch is visible, a testament to its unique method of carrying and nurturing its young.
