EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Ebenezer Sibly's Universal System of Natural History published in 1794-1796, showcases a unique and intriguing assembly of three distinct animals: the Kangaroo (Macropus giganteus), Badger (Meles meles), and Opossum (Didelphis virginiana). Sibly, a prolific naturalist, meticulously documented the natural world in his comprehensive five-volume work, covering fauna, flora, and geology. The central figure of this illustration is the majestic Kangaroo, the largest marsupial species, native to Australia. Its powerful hind legs are poised for a leap, while its long, muscular tail provides balance and support. The Kangaroo's pouch is visible, a testament to its unique method of carrying and nurturing its young. To the left, the Badger, a burrowing mammal, is depicted with its distinctive facial features, including its short, powerful legs, and sharp claws. Its body is covered in thick, dark fur, and its face is marked with distinctive stripes. To the right, the Opossum, a marsupial native to the Americas, is shown with its prehensile tail curled around a branch. Its face is characterized by its pink snout and elongated, pointed snout. The Opossum's ears are large and round, and its eyes are alert and curious. This exquisite illustration, produced using the copperplate engraving technique, showcases the remarkable attention to detail and accuracy that characterized Sibly's work. The handcoloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true masterpiece of historical natural history.
