EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals, published in Paris, France, in 1816, showcases two fascinating African antelope species: the Klipspringer, Oreotragus oreotragus, and the Roan Antelope, Hippotragus equinus. The illustration was created by the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who later became an artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving, directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and published by F.G. Levrault, beautifully captures the unique characteristics of these antelope species. The Klipspringer, also known as the cliff springer, is a small antelope native to Southern Africa. The species is well adapted to mountainous terrain, with a compact body and strong, curved horns. The Roan Antelope, on the other hand, is a large antelope with striking roan-colored coats, hence its name. Both species are depicted in their natural habitats, with the Klipspringer shown on a rocky outcrop and the Roan Antelope in a grassy savanna. The intricate details of the engraving, combined with the vibrant handcoloring, bring these animals to life and offer a glimpse into the natural history of the African continent during the early 19th century. The use of the copperplate stipple engraving technique, which involves the application of small dots to create shading and texture, adds to the overall beauty and depth of the illustration.
