EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the hot air balloon L Hirondelle V. Triquet, soaring gracefully through the clear blue sky, with two intrepid men aboard. The image, dated 18-, captures the essence of early aeronautical exploration and the thrill of flight. The L Hirondelle V. Triquet was piloted by the renowned French aeronauts, Victor and Joseph-Michel Montgolfier, and their associate Jean-Baptiste Meusnier. The Montgolfier brothers were pioneers in the field of hot air ballooning, having conducted the first manned hot air balloon flight in 1783. The print showcases the intricate details of the balloon's design, with its large, colorful fabric envelope filled with hot air, and the wicker basket suspended beneath it. The men, dressed in fashionable clothing of the late 18th century, can be seen holding onto ropes and gazing at the breathtaking view below. Their expressions suggest a sense of excitement and wonder as they experience the unique sensation of flying. The print is part of the Tissandier Collection, named after Henri Giffard Tissandier, a French aeronaut and aviation historian. Tissandier was a pioneer in the field of aviation photography and amassed an extensive collection of images documenting the history of flight. This print is a testament to the ingenuity and daring spirit of the early aeronauts and their pursuit of the seemingly impossible - taking to the skies in a hot air balloon.
