EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the grand procession through the streets of London during Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebration in 1897. The image is part of the Boswell collection, titled "Round about London," and was taken near the Victoria Embankment in the City of Westminster. The London Needle, a prominent feature in the scene, can be seen in the foreground. This ancient Egyptian obelisk, presented to the United Kingdom in 1819 by Muhammad Ali, the ruler of Egypt and Sudan, stands as a symbol of gratitude for the British victories at the Battle of the Nile and the Battle of Alexandria in 1801, led by Lord Nelson and Sir Ralph Abercromby, respectively. The Diamond Jubilee marked the sixtieth anniversary of Queen Victoria's reign, making it an occasion of significant historical importance. The procession, filled with pageantry and grandeur, showcases the unity and pride of the British people as they celebrate their monarch's milestone achievement. The London Needle, located near the Golden Jubilee Bridges and close to the Embankment underground station, adds an exotic touch to the scene, reminding us of the rich cultural connections that have shaped the city's history.
