This evocative photograph captures the LCC-LFB Lee Green sub-station, located at 345 Lee High Road in Lewisham, London. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, London was undergoing rapid expansion, and the London Fire Brigade responded by not only building new fire stations but also taking over existing buildings and converting them to serve the growing community's fire safety needs. The Lee Green sub-station, which opened in 1895, is an excellent example of this adaptive reuse. Situated in a parade of shops and dwellings, the Edwardian building blends seamlessly into the terraced streetscape. The sub-station's distinctive red brick facade, adorned with the London Fire Brigade crest, stands out against the pastel-hued shops and dwellings that surround it. The sub-station's interior housed vital electrical equipment that supplied power to the fire engines and other emergency vehicles. The London County Council (LCC) oversaw the construction and operation of the sub-station until 1905, when the London Fire Brigade moved to a purpose-built fire station just along the road. Despite its industrial purpose, the sub-station retains an air of elegance and charm, with its ornate archway and intricate brickwork.
