EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from the London Fire Brigade's archives, taken in 1988, we see the intense efforts of firefighters to contain a major blaze that seriously damaged the Woolworths store on Westow Hill in Crystal Palace, SE19. The smoke-filled air is thick with the acrid smell of burning materials as fifteen fire engines were called to the scene. At the heart of the operation, a hydraulic platform is raised high above the crowd, its outstretched arm reaching towards the roof of the building at the back. Fire crews, clad in protective gear, work diligently to gain access to the upper levels of the structure, using a 13.5 metre Lacon extension ladder for added reach. Hoses are deployed, water is sprayed, and the relentless battle against the flames continues. The hill in the background adds an extra challenge to the firefighting efforts, as the steep incline makes access to the scene more difficult. Despite these obstacles, the London Fire Brigade's brave men and women remain focused, their determination unwavering as they work tirelessly to bring the fire under control. The billowing smoke and the sight of the smoky, fire-damaged buildings serve as a stark reminder of the destructive power of fire. This photograph, taken in the 1980s, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the bravery and skill of the London Fire Brigade during a major emergency.
