Los Angeles Pigeon Farm, Elysian Park, California

Los Angeles Pigeon Farm, overlooking the Los Angeles River and surrounded by fields. Hundreds of pigeons perched on top of two of the cotes. The Farm was established in 1898 and located alongside the Los Angeles River and across from Elysian Park. It benefited from its proximity to the railroad tracks, as the free-flying pigeons could scavenge grain dropped from passing railroad cars. In 1914, heavy rains caused the Los Angeles river to flood, and much of the farm was washed away. Many of the estimated 500, 000 birds were killed as a result of the damage. Date: circa 1906

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Los Angeles Pigeon Farm, located in Elysian Park, California, circa 1906. The farm, established in 1898, was nestled alongside the Los Angeles River and benefited from its proximity to the railroad tracks. The free-flying pigeons could scavenge grain dropped from passing trains, making it an ideal location for raising these birds. The image showcases two of the farm's cotes, or dovecotes, with hundreds of pigeons perched on top, creating a mesmerizing sight. The tranquil scene is in stark contrast to the bustling city of Los Angeles that lies in the background. The Los Angeles Pigeon Farm was a significant part of California's agricultural history, with an estimated 500,000 birds residing there at its peak. However, in 1914, heavy rains caused the Los Angeles river to flood, resulting in the devastation of much of the farm. Sadly, many of the pigeons were killed during this natural disaster. Despite the challenges, the farm continued to thrive, providing a source of food and recreation for the community. The pigeons were not only raised for their meat but also for their feathers, which were used in various industries, such as insulation and stuffing for pillows and quilts. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing a unique aspect of Los Angeles' history that may be often overlooked. The image is a testament to the resilience of both the farm and the pigeons, which continued to adapt and survive in the face of adversity.
