EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases a gathering of four distinct primate species: the Mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx, also known as Mandrillus marmoratus, vulnerable), Baboon (Papio anubis, or Simia hamadryas, numbering 2 in the image), Barbary Macaque (Macaca sylvanus, endangered), and Southern Pig-tailed Macaque (Macaca nemestrina, vulnerable). The Mandrill, depicted in the center of the image, is the largest living primate in the Old World, characterized by its distinctive, colorful face and elongated snout. The Baboons, shown in pairs, are Old World monkeys, recognized by their long, curved canines and distinctive red buttocks. The Barbary Macaque, with its dark fur and white beards, is native to North Africa, while the Southern Pig-tailed Macaque, with its distinctive, long, prehensile tail, is native to Southeast Asia. This historical illustration highlights the natural beauty and diversity of these primate species, providing a glimpse into the natural world of over two centuries ago. The intricate handcoloring and meticulous copperplate engraving techniques used to create this image serve to enhance the detail and realism, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical primatology or natural history.
