In this evocative photograph, we see the enigmatic figure of Mark Kerr, the Scottish Abbot of Newbattle, in the midst of his forties, around the year 1584. Kerr's story is one of intrigue, conversion, and religious upheaval during the tumultuous sixteenth century in Scotland. Born into a noble family, Kerr was educated in Paris and became a Benedictine monk at Newbattle Abbey in Scotland. However, his religious allegiances were to undergo a dramatic shift. In the wake of the Scottish Reformation, Kerr, along with several other monks, converted to Protestantism in 1560. This decision placed him at odds with the Catholic Church and the Scottish authorities, who saw the Reformation as a threat to their power. Despite the risks, Kerr remained steadfast in his new faith and became an influential figure in the Scottish Protestant community. He was a key advisor to the Protestant Regent, Marquess of Moray, and played a crucial role in the establishment of the Protestant Church in Scotland.
