EDITORS COMMENTS
Mehmed II, also known as Mehmed the Conqueror or Fatih Sultan Mehmed, is depicted in this historical print wearing the distinctive turban of an Ottoman Sultan. Born in 1432, Mehmed ascended to the throne in 1451, at the age of 19, following the death of his father Murad II. His reign is considered a pivotal period in Ottoman history, as he is regarded as the true founder of the Ottoman Empire. Mehmed's most famous conquest took place in 1453, when he captured the Byzantine city of Constantinople, marking the end of the Byzantine Empire and solidifying the Ottoman Empire's position as a major European power. The conquest of Constantinople brought a significant influx of Greek scholars and artists to Istanbul, which contributed to the cultural and intellectual development of the Ottoman Empire. Mehmed's reign was marked by military conquests, administrative reforms, and the patronage of the arts and sciences. He is known to have built several mosques, madrasas, and other public buildings in Istanbul, including the Fatih Mosque, which remains a popular tourist destination today. Mehmed II died in 1481, at the age of 49, leaving behind a legacy that would shape the course of Ottoman history for centuries to come. This print, from Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the image of the great Sultan as he is remembered in history.
