EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases an enchanting assembly of small rodents: a Meadow Jumping Mouse (Zapus hudsonius) in the foreground, followed by a Sandy Mole Rat (Spalax arenarius) and a Grey Dwarf Hamster (Cricetulus migratorius). The second row presents a Siberian Hamster (Phodopus sungorus) and a Chinese Hamster (Cricetulus barabensis), while the third row includes a Northern Mole Vole (Ellobius talpinus) and a Cape Mole Rat (Georychus capensis). In the background, two additional mole rats, a Sand Mole Rat (Spalax spp.) and a Pallid Mole Rat (Spalax zemmigis), can be discerned. This illustration, created over two centuries ago, offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of these intriguing creatures. The Meadow Jumping Mouse, with its long hind legs, is known for its remarkable ability to jump long distances. The Sandy Mole Rat, native to North Africa and the Middle East, is an expert burrower, while the Grey Dwarf Hamster is widely distributed across Asia. The Siberian Hamster, found in Eastern Europe and Asia, is known for its distinctive white underbelly, and the Chinese Hamster is popular as a pet due to its small size and docile nature. The Northern Mole Vole is native to Europe and Asia, and the Cape Mole Rat, native to Southern Africa, is unique for its eusocial behavior and complex underground tunnels. The other mole rats in the background, though not labeled, add to the richness of this illustration, showcasing the diversity of rodents in the late 18th century. This beautiful and historically significant artwork serves as a testament to the enduring fascination with the natural world and the role of illustrations in documenting and preserving the knowledge of various species.
