EDITORS COMMENTS
Muybridge's Transverse Gallop: A Pioneering Moment in the History of Horse Photography This photograph, taken by the renowned pioneer of motion photography, Eadweard Muybridge, depicts a horse in the midst of a transverse gallop. Captured in the 1880s, this image is a testament to Muybridge's groundbreaking work in documenting the natural movements of animals, which would ultimately revolutionize the fields of art, science, and sports. Muybridge's fascination with the galloping horse began in 1872 when he was commissioned by Leland Stanford, the Governor of California, to settle a bet regarding the position of all four hooves of a galloping horse. With the support of Stanford, Muybridge designed and built a series of cameras, each with a tripwire and a shutter mechanism, which were arranged in a long row. As the horse passed through the sequence of cameras, each taking a photograph at the exact moment the tripwire was triggered, Muybridge was able to capture the horse's movements in a series of images. This photograph, part of the extensive collection of images documenting the horse's gallop, is particularly noteworthy due to its transverse perspective. Unlike most of Muybridge's work, which was taken from the side, this image captures the horse from a bird's-eye view. This unique perspective not only provides a fresh perspective on the horse's gallop but also emphasizes the grace and power of the animal's movements. Muybridge's innovative approach to capturing motion opened up new possibilities for the representation of movement in art and science, and his work continues to inspire artists and researchers to this day. This photograph, with its historical significance and artistic merit, is a must-have for anyone with an interest in the history of photography, horses, or the intersection of art and science.
