EDITORS COMMENTS
The Aldobrandini Wedding Fresco: A Glimpse into Ancient Roman Weddings and Culture The Aldobrandini Wedding Fresco, discovered in a house near the Arch of Gallienus in Rome in 1600, offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient Roman world, specifically the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, the mythological parents of Achilles. This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving by Corsi, from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1843, captures the essence of this historic event. The fresco depicts a grand wedding scene, with the bride and groom at the center, surrounded by various Roman matrons, gods, and goddesses. Peleus, clad in military armor, wears the distinctive crested helmet and carries a shield adorned with the image of a gorgon. Thetis, the goddess of the sea, is dressed in a flowing gown and veil, symbolizing her divine status. Among the guests, Charis or Peitho, the goddess of charm and persuasion, holds an alabastron, while Venus, the goddess of love, sits on the floor. Hymen, the god of marriage, is seated on the floor as well, indicating the sanctity of the occasion. The Muses, including Mneme, Aoede, and Melete, are also present, representing memory, music, and meditation, respectively. The surrounding architecture showcases the Roman influence, with a building featuring fortifications, wood, axe, lime, baskets, stone, timber, and a wall. Trajan's column and fortifications can be seen in the background, emphasizing the military and warfare aspects of Roman culture. This engraving offers a unique insight into the historical fashion, military, and cultural practices of ancient Rome, providing a captivating window into the past.
