EDITORS COMMENTS
Barrogill Castle, later known as The Castle of Mey, is a picturesque and historic Scottish edifice, located in the northernmost tip of Caithness, Scotland. In 1952, this stunning castle was purchased by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, who spent many summers there until her passing in 2002. The top photograph showcases the breathtaking view looking westwards towards Dunnet Head, the most northerly point of mainland Britain. The rugged cliffs and vast expanse of the North Sea create a sense of awe and isolation, making this location a truly unique and special place. The castle, nestled amongst the landscape, stands as a testament to the rich history and heritage of Scotland. The bottom photograph offers a different perspective, presenting the castle as viewed from the north-north-east. The Castle of Mey, with its distinctive red sandstone walls and turrets, stands proud against the backdrop of the sea and sky. The castle, which was originally built in the 16th century, has undergone several restorations, including one led by The Queen Mother herself. The Castle of Mey is not only a beloved royal residence but also a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world to explore its history and beauty. The castle's proximity to Dunnet Head and the stunning natural surroundings make it a must-see destination for anyone visiting the northernmost reaches of Scotland.
