Fine Art Print : The Battle of Vuelta de Obligado 1845
Fine Art Prints from Mary Evans Picture Library
The Battle of Vuelta de Obligado 1845
The battle of Vuelta de Obligado on 20th November 1845, was a collaborative attack by the French and British to defy the Argentine Confederations decision to block the unregulated sailing and trading of foreign ships in Argentinian waters, due to the French and British ships avoidance of paying custom taxes at Buenos Aires. Several ships and two steamers sail towards the Argentinian chain blockade, as soldiers on both sides fight on the shore where the Argentine camp is based. This resulted in a Anglo-French victory, but alienated previously anti-Confederation countries like Brazil and Chile, and had little economic success as it was still impossible to sail up river to trade. Date: 1845

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle of Vuelta de Obligado on 20th November 1845: A Turning Point in Argentine History This evocative image captures the intensity of the Battle of Vuelta de Obligado, which took place on 20th November 1845. The battle was a collaborative attack by French and British forces in response to the Argentine Confederation's decision to block unregulated sailing and trading of foreign ships in Argentinian waters. The Confederation had taken this measure to enforce the payment of custom taxes at Buenos Aires, which the foreign ships had been avoiding. The photograph shows several ships and two steamers sailing towards the Argentine chain blockade, with soldiers on both sides engaging in fierce combat on the shore where the Argentine camp was based. The battle resulted in an Anglo-French victory, but it had significant consequences. The previously anti-Confederation countries, such as Brazil and Chile, were alienated by the intervention, and the economic success of the venture was limited. Despite the victory, it proved impossible to sail upriver to trade due to the Confederation's continued resistance. This image provides a glimpse into a pivotal moment in Argentine history, when foreign powers sought to assert their influence in the region and the Argentine Confederation struggled to maintain its sovereignty. The Battle of Vuelta de Obligado marked a turning point in the conflict and highlighted the complex geopolitical dynamics of the time.
