EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases two fascinating species from the natural wonders of Brazil: the bearded marmoset (Cercopithecus barbatus) and the crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata). The bearded marmoset, also known as the Brazilian bearded monkey, is a small primate with distinctive facial hair and a prehensile tail. They are social animals that live in groups and use their sharp claws and strong jaws to forage for food in trees. The crested porcupine, on the other hand, is a well-known porcupine species with distinctive crest-like quills running along its back. This porcupine is native to Africa, but was mistakenly labeled as being from Brazil in this engraving. Porcupines are known for their ability to detach and shoot their quills at predators as a defense mechanism. This illustration is taken from Georg Wolfgang Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae, a collection of rare and exotic specimens from a Cabinet of Curiosities owned by P.L. Muller. The engraving is based on an original illustration from nature by Christian Leinberger and was produced by Blusse and Son in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1771. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this print offer a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating creatures and the curiosity and wonder that drove collectors to amass such unique collections.
