EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored lithograph, titled "Provence Hairstreaks and Coppers," is a stunning example of natural history art from the early 19th century. Created by the renowned French naturalists Hippolyte and Polydor Pauquet for their publication "Histoire des Papillons" (Story of Butterflies) in 1833, this print showcases six different species of butterflies native to Provence, France. The Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus), also known as the Polyommate De Lacacya or the Provence Hairstreak, is depicted in its vibrant, electric-blue glory at the center of the image. To its left, the Purple-edged Copper (Lycaena hippothoe), also known as the Chriseis, flaunts its intricate orange and black wings with purple edges. The Scarce Copper (Lycaena virgaureae), or La Verge Dor, is shown to the right, displaying its coppery-brown wings speckled with black spots. In the upper left corner, the Provence Hairstreak (Tomares ballus) graces the print with its elegant, wavy wings. This species, also known as the Purple-edged Hairstreak, is characterized by its striking purple edges and orange-brown wings. Two additional species are depicted in the lower corners: the Common Acacia Blue (Polyommatus icarus 1) and the Purple-edged Acacia Blue (Polyommatus icarus 2). These two closely related species can be distinguished by the subtle differences in their wing patterns. This work of art not only highlights the intricate beauty of these butterfly species but also serves as a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and dedication to natural history that characterized the scientific illustrations of the 19th century. The hand-coloring technique adds an extra layer of depth and vibrancy to the already stunning lithograph, making it a true masterpiece for any nature enthusiast or collector.
