EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored engraving, created by Goulu after an original illustration by Oudart for Charles d'Orbigny's Universal Dictionary of Natural History published in Paris in 1849, showcases two intriguing reptiles: the Common Green Iguana (Iguana iguana and Iguana tuberculata) and the European Green Lizard (Lacerta viridis). The Common Green Iguana, also known as the American Iguana or the Rhinoceros Iguana, is native to Central and South America. With vibrant green scales and a distinctive crested head, this large herbivorous lizard can grow up to six feet in length. The Common Green Iguana is an excellent climber, able to change color according to its surroundings for camouflage, and is known for its ability to regulate its body temperature by basking in the sun. The European Green Lizard, on the other hand, is native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. This medium-sized lizard, with its distinctive green coloration and distinctive black stripe down its back, is an omnivore that feeds on a variety of insects, snails, and plants. The European Green Lizard is an excellent climber and can change color from green to brown to blend in with its surroundings. Both reptiles are fascinating examples of the incredible diversity of the reptile world and were meticulously documented and illustrated during the 19th century, a time when natural history was a burgeoning scientific discipline. This beautiful handcolored engraving is a testament to the artistry and scientific rigor of the time, providing a window into the natural world of over 170 years ago.
