EDITORS COMMENTS
The Front Cover of The Tatler, June 20, 1930: A Meeting of Stars at Waterloo Station This iconic front cover of The Tatler, dated June 20, 1930, captures a memorable moment in the history of British theatre. The image features theatrical impresario Charles B. Cochran, along with actresses Peggy Wood and Evelyn Laye, at Waterloo Station in London. Charles B. Cochran (1857-1951), a legendary figure in the world of British theatre, is seen in the center, warmly welcoming Evelyn Laye (1907-1996) as she arrives from America to take over the role of Lady Shayne from Peggy Wood in the hit Noel Coward play, Bitter Sweet. The play, which opened in London in 1922, was a significant success and showcased the acting talents of some of the most renowned performers of the time. Peggy Wood (1892-1978), an accomplished American actress who had made a name for herself in both the US and the UK, is seen smiling and looking on as Cochran greets Laye. Wood had been playing the role of Lady Shayne to great acclaim and was passing the baton to her successor. Evelyn Laye, a rising star in her own right, is beaming with excitement as she steps off the train, dressed in a stylish flapper outfit that was popular in the 1930s. The anticipation of taking on such a prestigious role and joining the esteemed cast of Bitter Sweet is evident in her expression. This image is a testament to the glamour and excitement of the theatre world in the 1930s, as well as the enduring legacy of Charles B. Cochran and the remarkable actresses who graced the stages of London's West End.
