The image is taken from the renowned "Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière" (Natural History, General and Particular) by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, published by the Imprimerie Royale in Paris in 1766. The Crab-eating Macaque, also known as the long-tailed macaque or the aigrette macaque, is a primate native to South and Southeast Asia. This agile and intelligent species is often found near water sources, where they feed on a diverse diet, including crabs, fruits, and leaves. In this illustration, the macaque is shown deftly using a stone as a tool to crack open a crab, showcasing their remarkable problem-solving abilities.
