EDITORS COMMENTS
"This striking image captures the moment of triumph as French General Forey and his military procession enter Mexico City in 1862. Following the French victory during the Second French Intervention in Mexico, General Forey rode at the head of a grand military parade, accompanied by six horses, down a wide avenue lined with cheering crowds. The people of Mexico City had little choice but to welcome their new conquerors, as the French had successfully overthrown the Mexican government and installed Maximilian I as the new emperor. The triumphant procession marked the beginning of a new era for Mexico, one that would be marked by foreign rule and political instability. Despite the joy and excitement of the moment, the entry of General Forey and his troops into Mexico City would ultimately lead to years of struggle and hardship for the Mexican people."
