EDITORS COMMENTS
Fox Hunting Expedition: A Victorian Scene of Gentlemen and Boys on Horseback, as Illustrated by John Leech This handcoloured steel engraving, titled "Mr. Jug Boyston and his Juvenile Field," depicts a lively fox hunting scene from the 19th century. The image, taken from Robert Smith Surtees' book "Plain or Ringlets?" published by Bradbury and Evans in London in 1860, was brought to life through the masterful artistry of English caricaturist and illustrator, John Leech. At the heart of the scene, we find the distinguished fox hunter, Mr. Jug Boyston, astride his horse, dressed in the traditional red coat and tall hat, with a determined expression on his face. Accompanying him are a group of boys on ponies, their faces filled with excitement and anticipation. The youngest boy, with a cherubic face and curly locks, clings to his pony, while another brushes his horse's mane with a handheld brush. A girl, with her long, flowing hair adorned with a garland, brushes her own locks with a comb, adding a touch of femininity to the scene. The engraving's intricate detail is evident in the folds of the hunter's cape, the boys' winged collars, and the delicate curls of their hair. The use of calligraphic elements, such as the title and the vignette, adds an elegant touch to the image. The whimsical touch of a cherub holding a mirror and a bouquet, as well as a barber with a winged cape, adds a comical and humorous element to the scene. This charming illustration offers a glimpse into the Victorian era, where fox hunting was a popular pastime for the upper class and their children. The image's timeless appeal lies in its ability to capture the essence of a bygone era, filled with tradition, adventure, and the simple joys of country life.
