EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, music hall star Fred Karno is seen relaxing in the elegantly furnished living room of his house-boat, moored on Taggs Island near Hampton Court on the River Thames. The year is 1913, and Karno, dressed in a smart suit and hat, sits comfortably in an armchair, his wife seated beside him on a plush settee. The room is adorned with ornate wooden panels, plush fabrics, and tasteful decor, creating an atmosphere of refinement and comfort. Fred Karno was a renowned English comedian, actor, and theatrical producer, who rose to fame in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for discovering and nurturing the talents of many future stars, including Charlie Chaplin, Stan Laurel, and Buster Keaton. Karno's innovative and hilarious comedy routines captivated audiences, making him one of the most successful and influential figures in the entertainment industry of his time. The house-boat, named Karsino, was one of Karno's many eccentricities. He purchased the boat in 1910 and transformed it into a luxurious floating home, complete with a ballroom, a library, and a billiard room. Karno and his family would frequently entertain guests on the house-boat, including many prominent figures from the world of show business. Taggs Island, located near Hampton Court, was a popular destination for the wealthy and famous, and Karno's presence only added to its allure. In 1915, he opened the Karsino Hotel and Club on the island, which became a popular social hub for London's elite. The photograph captures a moment of relaxation and contentment for Karno and his wife in the beautiful surroundings of their unique home on the Thames.
