EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of the Great Demonstration held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 13th June 1908. An estimated ten thousand suffragettes, dressed in their best attire, gathered at the Embankment before setting off on a peaceful procession towards the iconic venue. Organized by the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS), the demonstration aimed to raise awareness for women's suffrage and demand the right to vote. The suffragettes, a collective term for women who fought for women's suffrage through various means including peaceful protests, marched in neat rows of either four or six, their determination and resolve evident in their determined expressions. Thousands more squeezed into the Royal Albert Hall to attend the NUWSS meeting, eager to listen to speeches from prominent suffragists and leaders, including Lady Frances Balfour, the wife of the Prime Minister, who was a vocal supporter of women's suffrage. The scene inside the hall was one of excitement and anticipation, with women of all ages and backgrounds coming together to demand their right to vote. The suffragette movement, which had gained momentum in the early 1900s, was reaching a crescendo, and this demonstration was a testament to the power of collective action and the unwavering commitment of these women to secure their place in the political arena. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in women's history and the struggle for their right to vote. The ten thousand women who attended this demonstration, and the countless more who supported the cause, played a crucial role in paving the way for women's suffrage and the eventual passage of the Representation of the People Act in 1918, which granted some women the right to vote for the first time.
