The production was staged at the Theatre Royale de l'Opera Comique in Paris during the 1854 season. Leonard Hermann-Leon (1814-1858) was a celebrated singer of his time, known for his powerful voice and expressive performances. In this image, he is depicted in the iconic costume of Captain Roland, a character from the popular opera based on Alexandre Dumas' novel "The Three Musketeers."
