EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Kathleen, Lady Scott, Baroness Kennett (1878-1947), is captured in the midst of her artistic process as she meticulously sculpts the ten-foot statue of Edwin Montagu, the former Secretary for India, in her London studio. Dressed in a simple, long-sleeved blouse and an apron, Lady Scott's intense focus is palpable as she deftly manipulates the clay with her hands, her expression reflecting the deep concentration required to bring her vision to life. The studio is filled with the tools of her trade: chisels, hammers, and various other sculpting implements, all arranged neatly on the shelves and workbenches that line the room's perimeter. Edwin Montagu's statue, destined for Calcutta, is a significant commission for Lady Scott. Montagu, who served as Secretary of State for India from 1917 to 1922, was a prominent figure in British politics and a key player in the Indian independence movement. Lady Scott's masterful depiction of him will serve as an enduring tribute to his legacy and contributions. Born Kathleen Bruce, Lady Scott was a British sculptor who gained recognition for her work during her first marriage to the renowned Antarctic explorer, Captain Robert Falcon Scott. After Scott's tragic death on the Ross Ice Shelf in 1912, Lady Scott married Edward Hilton Young, and they had two children, Wayland Hilton Young, a writer and politician, and Sir Peter Scott, a painter and ornithologist. Lady Scott's impressive body of work includes numerous public monuments and private commissions, cementing her place in the annals of British sculpture history.
