EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Plee Jr. after an original illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre, showcases three remarkable species of venomous snakes: the Lancehead Viper (Bothrops atrox, 1), the Ceylon Pit Viper (Trimeresurus trigonocephalus, 2), and the Berg Adder (Bitis atropos, 3). The Lancehead Viper, also known as the Fer-de-lance, is a powerful and aggressive snake native to Central and South America. Its distinctive triangular head and hourglass-shaped markings make it easily recognizable. Its venom is potent and can cause severe pain, swelling, and even death in humans. The Ceylon Pit Viper, native to Sri Lanka, is a small, agile snake with a distinctive triangular head and a series of pits on its face, which it uses to detect the heat signatures of its prey. Its venom is hemotoxic, causing damage to the tissue and blood vessels. The Berg Adder, or the Rhinoceros Viper, is a large, powerful snake native to Africa. Its unique body shape, with a broad head and large, rhino-like scales, makes it easily identifiable. Its venom is hemotoxic and can cause severe pain, swelling, and tissue damage in humans. This engraving, taken from Bernard Germain de Lacepede's Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans, published in Paris in 1825, provides a detailed and accurate representation of these fascinating snakes. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the engraving bring the snakes to life, showcasing their unique features and the beauty of their natural forms.
