EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the historic moment of the Landing of Leonard Calvert, the first Governor of Maryland, at St. Mary's City on March 25, 1634. Established as the first English settlement and colony in the Maryland area, St. Mary's City marked the beginning of colonialism in North America during the 17th century. Leonard Calvert, a prominent English nobleman, led a group of settlers from England to establish the new colony. The group arrived aboard the Ark and the Dove, two ships that carried supplies, livestock, and the first settlers. The landing took place on the shores of the St. Mary's River, where Calvert and his followers were welcomed by the local Native American tribes, including the Piscataway and the Choptank. The event marked the beginning of a new era for the region, as the English settlers began to establish farms, build homes, and establish a government. The colony of Maryland was named after Queen Henrietta Maria, the queen consort of King Charles I of England, and was intended to be a refuge for English Catholics seeking religious freedom. The image depicts Calvert and his settlers disembarking from the ships, with Native Americans in the background, symbolizing the beginning of a complex relationship between the English and the indigenous peoples of the region. The 17th century was a time of exploration, expansion, and colonization, and the Landing of Leonard Calvert at St. Mary's City is an important moment in the history of North America.
