This evocative image captures the historic moment of the Landing of Leonard Calvert, the first Governor of Maryland, at St. Mary's City on March 25, 1634. Established as the first English settlement and colony in the Maryland area, St. Mary's City marked the beginning of colonialism in North America during the 17th century. Leonard Calvert, a prominent English nobleman, led a group of settlers from England to establish the new colony. The group arrived aboard the Ark and the Dove, two ships that carried supplies, livestock, and the first settlers.
